Got it Mandy. AIM starts automatically by default. Press F7 to access the settings in AIM, and in there will be a check box to tell AIM to start. Uncheck it, click save, and all should be well.

As soon as I start my laptop, AIM comes up and says AIM available and I can tab to different things like buddy list place for status message etc. It seems to be preventing some things opening in IE8 also what do I do so that it doesn't automatically open up with Windows? When I installed it I clicked on Windows link before installation I couldn't find any version of AIM on one of the sites like WhiteStick. Mandy.
