Actually, I have a little program on my PC that voices all the stuff I load
onto my Iriver. I just run it and it puts a little file into the folder of the
artist I want voiced. This means that it tells me each file by name, not
spelled. The program only makes tiny files, so it isn't really eating a lot of
space.
I do agree though that Rockbox is patchy and a bit slow, but it means I can
access the 40GB of hard drive on the Iriver as an intermediate solution. But
you're right, you can't beat TALKS, and I'd never ever be without it or the
facilities the phone gives me for music and everything else. It's the best
invention of this century so far (smile).

I must admit, I hate Rockbox. It is a kind of half-baked solution. OK, it
kind of works, but unless you go to trouble to create voice scripts, it can
only spell out file names. I wish someone would put a real TTS into an MP3
player, but I don't think it is going to happen soon. Long live Talks eh?

I'd recommend an Iriver, if only you could get one. I use Rockbox on that,
and find it very accessible with that software, even if it is a bit fiddly to
initially get it going.
I can't comment on any of the Ipod range as I've never gone down that road.
My 8GB N91 does the job brilliantly for most purposes though.
I'm sure others will offer their thoughts.

I haven't been round for a while so apologies if this has been discussed in
the past. I want to get a new mp3 player which has a fairly sizable hd.
Anyone got any suggestions? How do people find the ipods with rockbox? Does
the Ipod 80gb classic support rockbox? And does it read out the filenames or
just spell them? I believe the classic has support for ID3 tagging, does this
work in the same way as say, the mp3 player on the N91 where it will
automatically group tracks by album etc. Also, with the Classic, can you just
use it like another hard drive and copy your mp3's across, or do you need to
use the Itumes software?
