Hi Eleanor,
To get a capital is the same as iOS. The shift key is above the Symbols key
at bottom left of the keyboard.
To check your stuff char by char, you can use the volume up and down keys
while the keyboard is up, they act as cursor keys.
Make sure Talkback is up to date from the Play Store, then go to
http://whww.inclusiveandroid.com, which is the kind of Applevis for Android,
and most importantly, don't compare it to iOS, think of it as a new learning
curve, or you'll fall at the first hurdle.

To speed up, you'll need to go into TTS settings, go to Settings,
Accessibility, TTS Settings, then you can speed up the voice. There is
where you can also change voices.

Subject: [access-uk] Android Beginner
Hi All, just trying android for the first time tonight and I am totally lost
as an iOS user. I want to put in a password which has an initial capital
letter and can't work out how to do this. I would also like to know when i
have written something like my e-mail address how I can check it back
character by charactter. Finally at this stage I would like to know how to
increase the speed of the female UK voice. Does she have a name? How many
other voices do I have to choose from?
