The important thing to remember is that all the companies use the same line and the same company for connecting you to their service. The actual speed you get from any particular provider will be very very similar to all the others, the only variation being due to the router they provide and any bandwidth throttling and the contention ratio. Note that these are all things that they dont advertise!

Service wise again they are all pretty similar, you will find that nearly everyone can tell you about a company that things went wrong with but that is because they all have so many customers. I remember a watchdog survey a couple of years back where they asked for opinion on broadband suppliers. The same companies that had the top 5 number of positive comments were the same companies that had the most negative comments.

If you are looking to save some cash then look to the provider of your other services, your mobile phone or tv provider will give you a discount on broadband.

I've had my ups and downs with Tiscali (now part of TalkTalk), however over the last few years I have had no major issues with them. On average I pay around £20 a month for broadband, line rental and free UK landline calls (including 01, 02, 0870 and 0845 numbers).

Plusnet. Not least because they have broadband from £6 a month and
when you call their call centre, you get a cheery Yorkshire greeting -
not exactly "Ay Up!" but beats the pants off the overseas call centre
hell that BT make you endure :)

Not saying it's perfect, but I've only had 2 problems in 5 years.

Hi Folks,

Time to look for another ISP as BT's prices could be better. Any
recommendations?

All the best
