[access-uk] Connexting a Scanner

Hi All
I have decided to connect my scanner for the first time since my upgrade over a
year ago. I have used it with XP before so I know it is compatible but I'm not
sure if the tower has a parallel port for it. I have a HP 5100C and a CD with
Scanjet software from HP. I didn't seem to have a cable so yesterday bought one
with 2 male connectors from Maplin's. I have found a port at the back of the
tower so assume this is in fact the parallel port. I have loaded the software
and connected the scanner with the system turned off as instructed. No record
of the connection is found on re-boot. I tried to add the hardware but when I
enter in on imaging devices for Hewlett Packard it only lists digital cameras.
Obviously to me I'm missing something here. Can someone explain to me what that
is please.
