Hello Darran,
This is a message from Charlie Coyle who works in the team here at RNIB who
work on Audio description.
Many thanks for your query.
You can refer to the TV Guide on Channel 5's website to find out which
programmes have been audio described. Please note, there is no AD or audio
description category within the Demand 5 player website or smartphone apps so
viewers will need to identify programmes from the TV guide and then choose AD
once the video has started playing. I know this mightn't be the easiest way of
finding shows with audio description but, unfortunately, that's the only way
when using Demand 5.
A colleague of mine has been able to get shows to play with AD on the web
player but I haven't been able to achieve this when using it with a screen
reader (JAWS). I'm an iOS user and I have got programmes with AD to work with
their iOS app. When the show starts playing, you need to flick until you get to
the audio description off button. Double tap on that. When you flick to it
again, it should then tell you that the button is 'selected'. Even though the
button's label still says it's off, if the button is selected the AD should
play. I do know that the Android app should work with AD but I'm told it's not
the easiest app to use with Talkback. Unfortunately, I haven't tested it myself
so am unable to give you any specific instructions on activating AD using it.
I'm sorry if the answer I've provided isn't what you were hoping for. If you
have any suggestions as to the accessibility of the Demand 5 website and or
apps, please do feel free to either email us or contact Channel 5 directly if
you prefer.
If you have any further or follow-up questions, please do feel free to email us
at any time at the following address:

I hope I've gone some way to answering your query.
Kind regards,
Charlie

Subject: [access-uk] Demand 5 and AD, Anyone?
Hi List.
Has anyone on here been able to access any audio described material on Demand 5?
I've read the RNIB stuff about it being available from last July, but no matter
how many times I revisit the site and try to access AD programming, I simply
can't do it.
Come to that, I can't even find the "AD" indicator for shows that carry
description!
As you can tell, one's not having much success with the whole demand 5 AD
thing. So any useful tips and tricks would be great, before I contact Channel 5
direct with my difficulties.
I've tried to achieve this using JAWS 14, 16 and 17 with IE11.
Many thanks.
