Hi Tony,
It won't read text that is embedded in the visual track of the programme. This
includes the opening titles, closing credits, scrolling news tickers,
competition entry details, numbers you can phone or text to comment on the
programme and various other burnt-in subtitles showing the name of a person
being interviewed or things like that. There is no product available anywhere
that will do this.
It will speak at least some of the metadata that is broadcast along with a
programme, such as whether it has audio description or subtitles. In theory, it
could speak other metadata, such as parental advisory codes, e.g. "this
programme is not suitable for children under 12 years old". This metadata is
provided in some countries but I'm not sure about the UK. I doubt very much
that it will speak the subtitles for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
This feature, called 'spoken subtitles', is available on some set top boxes in
some countries but I've not heard of it in the UK.
