Thank you for the suggestion. No I haven't. It is not primarily data which
is taking up the room but apps so I'm not sure that I would be able to move
those about in this way without causing problems.

Have you tried using Total Commander? It is rather like Windows Explorer.
You can move files about quite easily. It can be downloaded from the
Play Store.
