Hi.

Well then, it will depend on the program that was used to compress the zip file. If it is legacy zip IE uses the Deflate algorithm then windows will be able to open it. If it was compressed with WinZip however using their own proprietary compression algorithm then you'll have problems. My advice to you is to tell your contact if they are unable to open the zip file using windows to download and install WinZip, showing him if necessary. Alternatively, uncompress the files yourself and recompress them using legacy compression in WinZip, this will guarantee that the file can be opened on windows. Sorry if this is long winded but I want you to be clear on this point.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi.

Yes, xp has basic zip handling, its called Compressed
Folders. Make sure that your using Legacy compression when
sending your zip file else the person receiving it will need
WinZip to extract it. Incidentally, are you using the email
companion or WinZip proper to compress then email the file?

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi

I am trying to send a file to someone, the person who I
want
to receive the file doesn't know much about computers at
all, winzip is something totally new and strange to him.
Is
there a way of sending an exe file without zipping it up.
Avast thinks it's a virus. I have given the person the
program in a zip file but he's new to zip files and that's
something I'm going to have to teach him about later on.
Would windows xp just open the zip file without winzip?
