Don't know if anyone heard the interesting item on yesterdays You and Yours,
but it tackled the vexing and often exspensive problem, of automated phone
systems and a guy in America who has come up with a list of work arounds to
beat many of the systems. (US based info of course, but some of it apllicable
hear too.)

To hear the Y & Y feature go to:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/youandyours/ram/2005_49_mon_01.ram

The Beeb couldn't come up with the website of the guy, Paul English, who was
being interviewed, but I've found it at:

http://paulenglish.com/ivr/info.html

His views of phone automation are very balanced, as he does point out that
there are legit uses for it. Might be worth a look and to try some of the work
arounds if you are interested.
