In addition to what Kevin says, a couple more points:
I would STRONGLY suggest against going with BT Broadband - not only is
it relatively expensive, but the call centre is absolute hell to deal
with.
For £6.49 a month, you can get Plusnet Value broadband, you keep the
same line with BT, you get a free router - just the 10GB cap you were
worrying about.
But let's looks at that cap: Using
http://www.numion.com/Calculators/Time.html we can see that to
download more than 10Gb in a month, assuming a fairly standard 25%
overhead, it would take you 496 hours or over 20 days. That's 20 days
downloading solidly, 24 hours a day, no drops or disconnects. So
unless you're doing more than that, I wouldn't worry about caps.
About dialup being more secure, absolutely not. A broadband router has
a built-in firewall with sophisticated rules to stop both incoming
attackers AND dodgy looking outgoing traffic. With a modem, you don't
get that. As long as you're running Microsoft Security Essential and
it's up to date, you'll be fine with broadband.
People get hacked when they install toolbars, or respond to emails
from a bank asking for a password check, or fill forms in to "confirm"
their identity. Not from being connected to the internet.
