[access-uk] JAWS QUESTION, PLEASE!

Sorry, I really can't be on a Jaws list, so can anyone help with the following,
please?
My laptop appears not to be giving information when I've selected items (except
selecting all and none, when it reports that I've carried out those keystrokes.)
When I ask which items are selected, if I have only selected a couple, it is
unable to tell me? I'm referring to the Shift+Jaws Key+Down arrow keystroke.
What do I need to do to get my laptop to notice when items are/are not selected?
Incidentally, I'm using the desktop layout on my laptop as I'm using an
external keyboard.
