I haven't got hold of one of these yet, but my understanding is the Kindle touch has text to speech for reading book content, but no speech for the controls or book list. So a blind person could not independently browse the books on the device, but once a book is opened the content could be read out. What is still unclear is whether the touch screen would need to be used to start the text to speech - if so then you'd need to memorise a sequence of screen taps to get it going. I am hoping to get one of these soon and put a clarification on the RNIB website about it. At the moment the only proven accessible Kindle device is the Kindle Keyboard, and the only version of that which is still sold new in the UK is the £149 3G version. There is also the Kindle for PC with accessibility application for a Windows computer, which is free but of course doesn't have the same portability as the Kindle devices. I know no more than that. As the name suggests, it hass a touch screen but no keyboard, but it may be useable by the visually impaired. I understand there are models which are 3G? wireless? Would probably just download from the kindle store to our pc and transfer to the reader, assuming this is possible?? Any suggestion for which model to go for would be great!
