Hi Richard and everyone,
Yes, Richard, as the others have said, there is ZoomText. This
package has recently gone through a difficult upgrade development, where
the early versions of ZoomText 8 were unreliable and buggy, as compared
to the very stable and solid version 7.11. But now that we are at
version 8.11, I think, the old reliability and stability have returned
and ZoomText is an excellent magnification choice.
With version 8 there are two versions. ZoomText Magnifier is the
magnification only version of the package. ZoomText Screenreader
Magnifier is the magnification package with lots of speech support.
Both packages are competitively priced as compared to Dolphin products.
To find out more about ZoomText, go to www.aisquared.com where you can
download a fully functional thirty day trial version of both versions of
ZoomText.
I've used ZoomText myself for several years. I'm currently using
version 7, but only because I got a bit bogged down in the reliability
and performance problems in early releases of version 8. I do use the
screenreader version, as I like to have speech for reading lengthy
chunks of text. The DocReader facility in version 7 is good for this
purpose and is still there in version 8. However, the AppReader
facility in version 8 is probably better, since it preserves the
on-screen format of the document layout, so that you can see which bit
of the screen is currently being read; this is very useful if you are
primarily a visual person.
The last figures I saw showed ZoomText as having something over 60%
of the magnifiers market, with Supernova some way behind and nothing
else in sight. Lunar Plus is probably the closest Dolphin product to
ZoomText Screenreader Magnifier.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Brendan.
