Yes, I did see the subsequent mail and apologies to the list for jumping in
before seeing it - my ISP was down for 32 hours!

F9 in Excel is purely the key for recalculating.  By default, recalculate is
on, but occasionally pressing F9 does resolve some issues.
It is possible to turn it off in menu tools options.  There you will find 12
( I think) tab boxes, one of which is "calculate" the first tab being a tick
box for it to be automatic, or turned off.

As you may have seen from my follow-up post to George, I finally cracked it 
after maximising a few times and completely closing the workbook.  I hadn't 
come across the F9 to re-calculate.  When is this useful?  I mean, what does

it actually do?
