Subject: [access-uk] Newsbridge USB player cassette replacement for talking
newspapers

Hope many hear find this interesting. I heard about this last night
as, seemingly, its being considered by Reditch Talking Newspaper who
it seems have the money to equip themselves with these new portable
USB speaker players, as well as the recording and duplication
equipment the company sells.

Here's the info off the website, and I'll make a few comments
afterwards.

At Last, a Genuine Replacement for the Analogue Cassette!

Bridge Digital is proud to introduce its easy-to-use, affordable and
environmentally friendly digital recording and duplication system.

If your organisation is a Talking Newspaper, Audio Book club or
similar, then NewsbridgeT is for you!

    * Make high quality digital recordings from any computer
    * No knowledge of digital recording required!
    * Record from your home or office
    * For your service users, playing a recording is easier than using
a cassette recorder
    * Use existing volunteers for duplicating, packing and sending
    * A reusable system that's environmentally friendly
    * Half the cost of other digital recording systems

How does it work?

1. Use our NewsbridgeT software on virtually any computer to make your
digital recordings. It couldn't be easier, just use the controls
on-screen as you would on a cassette recorder. If you make a mistake
just stop, rewind a little, then record again!
                Easy-to-use Newsbridge digital recording software

2. Duplicate the digital recordings onto 20 thumbdrives at a time, by
pressing a single button in NewsbridgeT. Alternatively, if making a
recording at home, just copy to a single thumb drive, then send it
back to the office for them to edit and duplicate.
                Duplicate thumbdrives with Newsbridge

3. Send the thumbdrives to your service users - they just plug their
thumbdrive in to the Newsbridge loud speaker, and start listening!
Send thumbdrives to your service users

4. Thumbdrives are returned to be used

Comments:

Two concerns occur to me:

1. Is USB durable enough to be plugged and unplugged many times?
I've not seen the units so maybe the sockets, and inserting the USB
sticks is better accomplished than on say, many USB hubs.

the software. Looks as if it is very mouse driven. I've emailed
asking about keyboard support. You'd have thought they'd have
considered this as at least one of the guys concerned was involved in
the Guide access software solution.

I feel it is important as talking newspapers could, or should be, a
valuable source of vol work and involvement for VI people, seeing as
we're locked out of so much else in life.

Wonder, by the way, if anyone on-list is involved in a local TN.

Also, anyone actually come across a Newsbridge player yet?
