I am glad that you are enjoying the radio but I cannot claim any credit for identifying it. My sister, after being dismayed by the loss of radio functionality on her Pocket Plextalk, because of recent changes by the BBC, had asked her teenage Grandson Josh to try and identify a possible radio that she could use as a blind person as an alternative.

He spent a long time looking at pictures of radios online and looking at feedback and came up with this as an option. My sister bought one and after he helped her set it up she rang me to tell me about it.

After buying one myself I thought it was worth passing the information on to the list. However Josh did all the research.

Hi David
I got mine yesterday and noted that I would need Sighted support to set it up,
as you clearly stated at the outset.
I love it. I am totally blind, and a bit daft as regulars here well know.
I love this device was set up for me by my sighted neighbour and his
eleven-year-old son, really the other way round, and am so happy.
Can understand the frustration of trying it without sighted help, but you did
say that at the start.
Neat cheap and with great sound -- on my own headphones.
Thanks and any other recommendations would be very welcome.
Cheers Jeff

With respect I did say in my initial review that sighted help may be needed for
initial set up.
There is no bandwagon, just visually impaired people trying to help each other
use a device which personally I would not want to do without now, especially at
the price.

I am completely blind and have used the radio with ease for nearly a week now.
There is absolutely no reason why any person should feel pressured to shell out
£30 for a radio completely usable by a blind person but it is a story which
people should be allowed to share.

with respect this is not accessable for those of us with no useful vision, very
glad I did not jump on the band wagon and pay out for this device.

The method below in David's mail does work and I have now preset 15 or so of
the 30 DAB stations available. However, I relied heavily on my sight and my
low vision aid to do this and do not believe I could have done it without. On
a more positive note the print on the screen is pretty good in terms of size.
I've yet to monkey with the brightness to see if contrast can be improved.

I found this on Amazon in relation to Presets.

The main point of this review was to help those that have the same problem I
did, which is setting the DAB presets. You should do this NOT by pressing the M
button and then selecting the presets from the memory. Instead when you have
the station you want to set, press and hold the DAB FM button until the list of
empty presets appears. Then select the one you want and touch lightly and
quickly the middle on/off button. This should work but then is not 100%
successful.

there is an additional function with this radio which I don't think David has
mentioned. It is possible to record DAB or FM output to a micro SD card. Will
try this and report back.

As far as I can tell presets work like this.

Select the DAB station you want to store by cruising up and down the dial using
left and right arrows.

While listening, press and long hold the mode button. This brings up the
preset list.

Select the preset number from the list which you want to store the station you
are listening to on.

Press the enter button until the screen has shown "Saved". Without sight my
guess would be that holding for between 3 and 5 seconds would be enough.

Retrieving presets will obviously require you to remember which station is
stored on which preset and then find it in the preset list by counting.

I am getting some requests for information off list so rather than responding
to lots of queries individually I will collate some of the responses I have
made so far.

Q. How has it been to use?
I have found it very good so far and it has lived on a lanyard around my
neck ever since I got it really.

Q. Has there been any problems?
There is one anomaly whereby putting the device into the charger turns it on
and start the radio playing if it is off and seems to do the opposite if
it is on, that is turn it off. You can still listen whilst charging though.
My sister reports that the same thing happens with her. However the workaround
for this if this is a problem for you is to put it into mp3 player mode
whilst charging and the device will not play at all. Or of course just take
the headphones out whilst charging which is what I tend to do.

Q. What about Presets?
I have not sorted out how to set the preset yet but apparently a large number
can be set.
I need to go back to the customer reviews on the Amazon website as apparently
the preset instructions in the user guide are not that clear. However I
remember people posting on the web how it can be done
This is not really an issue for me at the moment as it is so very easy and
straight forward to click to the stations I want easily but when I sort it out
I will post some instructions.

QWhat is the battery life?
I am plugging it into charge every night so I have not really tested it but it
seem absolutely fine so far and has not run out despite pretty heavy use
QDoes it come with a USB charger,
A. The Victor Reader uses a slightly smaller micro USB lead whilst this uses
the slightly larger mini USB lead which is the type you for example plug into
your Plextalk if you want to connect it to a PC or charge your Plextalk through
the USB socket. What you will get with the Radio is a USB lead through
which you can charge the radio either by putting it into an normal USB plug
adapter or through your PC. I am using the plug adapter which I got with my
iPhone as I normally charge my iPhone through the PC. If you do not have any
USB plug adapters you might want to get one. They are pretty cheap.
Q. How does it compare in size with the Plextalk Pocket?
Much smaller. About a third of the size I guess
Q. Have you tried the MP3 feature yet? A. Not yet. I need to get an mico SD
card. I thought I had one but cannot find it.
Q. What is reception like?
A. Reception is probably better than the Pure PocketDavb 1500 I used to use and
is comparable to the Move 2500 personal I bought last year if that any
guide.
