Hi Marie
I am fairly sure that you need a special programme to play DVD on a p.c.
One such programme is called Power DVD. There are others but Power DVD is
the one that I had some time ago.
This is the decoder referred to in the message you mention from Windows
Media Player. Nearly all DVDs are encrypted and rationalized, and need a
decoder to read them. These come as part and parcel of a standard DVD
player, but are not included in p.c. media players such as Windows Media
Player or Real Player etc.
Sorry I don't have a web address where you can download Power DVD, but
hopefully someone else on the list may be able to help with this or some
other decoder.

Recently I heard someone mention on this list that he was playing dvds on
his pc with Winamp.
I've spent most of yesterday trying to achieve this without success.
I've made sure my dvd driver is working properly on device manager, it is.
I have Winamp 5.2 so the version of the program is not that old is it?
When I try to play any dvd JFW 5.0 says track 1 and even after ten
minutes wait nothing happens.
I tried to play the dvd with Realplayer1 gold I have on my machine, got
the following message: Realplayer needs an update to be able to play this
clip.
I then tried Windows mediaplayer thinking that, since I work with xp home
and sp2 everything there should be bang up-to-date. got the following
message: Mediaplayer doesn't have the necessary decoder to play this disk.
By then, I was getting a bit frustrated so decided to download mediaplayer
10 as I was urged to do.
As far as I can tell, the installation went without problem but when I
tried to play a dvd I got the same message as before. Went to Microsoft
site to try to learn more about codec, but, the more I read the more
confused I became.
Can someone help here?
There is obviously something to update on my pc, but what and from where?

P.S. Power dvd came in a bundle with my machine when I bought it but it
is an old version not compatible with xp. Do I have to buy a new version
of this program for my dvd player to work? thought any of the media player
on my system would have the necessary decoderand make it go...
