Hello,

I have been having problems with the latest build of Jaws 12 on my work
laptop. I'm not sure whether it's specifically a Jaws problem or could be
related to the fact that I had to have my laptop re-built last week due to a
hard disk problem. The laptop is a Samsung running Windows XP Pro SP3. I
had Jaws 12 installed from the DVD once the re-build was complete and then
was prompted to install the latest build through the automatic update
feature. Once I did this and re-booted, Jaws would not read anything
properly. The main symptoms are that the numeric keypad (I use an external
USB keyboard) is not being taken over by Jaws, so when I press what should
be the insert key, nothing happens, and if I press insert+8 to read the
current line, Jaws behaves as if I've pressed the up arrow key. I've tried
both laptop and desktop layout with no difference. Jaws will also not stop
talking once it starts, so if I cursor from one item to another, everything
is spoken in full, rather than the cursor keys being able to interrupt the
speech. Even the control key will not shut Jaws up, but if I execute a
command from my Braille display, this will interrupt the speech. Also, when
I'm on the desktop, Jaws speaks "not selected" before each item as I cursor
to it.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing from the DVD and from the .EXE
file of the latest build which I've downloaded from the internet, but the
problem persists. I have been in contact with Sight & Sound and they have
recommended I check the Accessibility options and to make sure that I'm not
set to use a high contrast mode, but everything is as it should be. I have
sent S&S the video chaining information in case there is a problem there,
but in the meantime, I wondered whether anyone else had experienced a
problem like this and if so, how can it be resolved?

I've had to resort to a different laptop in order to be able to get any work
done. It's also running Jaws 12 with the latest build and XP Pro with SP3,
and although it's a Toshiba instead of a Samsung, it is working fine with
Jaws.

Thanks for any help,

Caroline.
