Dear Jeff,

The latest version is 12 and you are asked about your accent when setting up
the programme. Different american accents are certainly catered for.

I had to use dictation when I broke my hand about 9 months ago. I used
Dragon Naturally Speaking with Jaws 12 and no other adaptive scripts.

It saved my bacon so far as work was concerned but, if you are trying to
produce high quality texts it is not always ideal. This is partly because of
the English language, there are so many words which sound the same but have
different meanings and are spelled differently. Two examples out of the
thousands are "higher" and "hire" and presents" and "presence". I'm not
convinced that even the most complex additional scripting would solve this.
I was lucky enough to have a sighted person who was able to check what I had
written for such errors. I should add that even a sighted friend has reduced
his use of the programme precisely because too many such errors were
slipping through.

I have also found that training does not always work - if it is consistently
misunderstanding a word or phrase there is a facility which allows you to
dictate how you say the word concerned so that it can recognise it better in
the future. I have found that it is certainly not 100% effective.

Much as I would like to be able to dictate all the time my personal
experience so far is that it is safer and quicker to type.

Best wishes

Robert

Which version of dragon do people find is easiest to run?
People talk about premium but 11.5 or I have even noticed 12.
Also do they cater for US English or English English?
Jeff
