Hi Mark, Something else to throw into the melting pot is solid state amps. Possibly a little frowned upon these days still but they have improved considerably over the last years. For HF, around £950 or so will get you a fairly good amp. Something like a 500 watt Ameritron. You do though need to pay particular attention to the amount of power going into the amp. Generally only about ten watts or so. I probably should have done a search for such lists in the first place. David, so I can best pose the question elsewhere, I wonder if you could outline these incorrect assumptions I'm making? I apologise if anything I've said has been inaccurate, only I'm afraid amplifiers are a completely new ball game to me. Feel free to mail me off-list to avoid traffic which wouldn't be of interest to the majority of people on here. Smile. As an initial comment, you are making incorrect assumptions. I'm just wondering, if anyone uses a linear amp on HF? Due to the very nature of them they obviously require tuning, then there's the issue of the auto tuner not being able to handle anything past 300W, and I'm lead to believe one probably needs 400 + to make any difference. It's not that I'm power-crazy, I'm just thinking it might give me a bit of a "leg up" in the somewhat fiercer pileups. I'd be interested to see if anyone has any solutions! I fear it might be a bit of a long-shot though, as there doesn't appear to be anything on active-elements.
