Just to add to what George says, you will be able to use either WEP or the
newer WPA encryption schemes, newer wireless adapters have the WPA system which
is better. Not only does it encode the traffic so onlookers cannot decipher it
but it will stop users who do not have the key logging onto the network. The
only thing they will be able to see possibly is that the network exists,
however can you can also disable SSID broadcast if you are that paranoid about
it.
There is also another way of increasing security which is by MAC address. Many
routers allow you to deny connections by MAC address so that only those bearing
the specified MAC addresses can connect to the network. This is what I do
because I can only use the older WEP security.
