I use the Microsoft anti-spyware program with Window-Eyes version 4.5 and
can get along okay with it. You can schedule an automatic scan to run when
you want it to. Mine is set to run a scan every day at 6.30 am before I
start usingmy computer for the day. Apart from that, as George says, it's
running in the background all the time so is constantly checking. The
updates are automatic with just an okay button at the bottom of the
notification. If you give it a try and have problems, write to me off list
and I'll try to help.
