"I also think the climb down involved in releasing Jaws Standard to
Media Centre, which is what they need to do would be too much. I don't know
what the plans for flavours of Vista are, but I suspect most of us will end
up on Jaws Pro as some point to get the most out of it. Jaws Standard is
more expensive than Wineyes Pro."

I suspect quite strongly that this will be incorrect as regards the assertion
regarding VISTA, the reasons are:
a) Windows Media Centre edition is an anomally in the Windows family being
based squarely on XP Pro with media bits added on, this had an unfortunate
consequence for Jaws licensing as it has required a professional license, but
nonetheless is an anomally.
b) As before Windows has two sub sets, Home and Business. With windows VISTA
family the domestic volume seller is likely to be VISTA Home Premium and is
truely marketed as a domestic operating system under the Home subset, as is
Home Basic edition. Most PCs you will see on sale this year will have Home
Premium on them and therefore logically require a standard license.

The only anomalous exception to this will be Vista Ultimate Edition which will
be an almost true cut and shut betwen Home Premium and Vista Business edition.
It is not entirely clear who exactly other than die hard tech heads and gamers
will go for this and is unlikely to just be installed as standard but rather a
user upgrade which is likely to see many domestic customers eyes water. In
this case you would definitely need a Jaws professinal license.

  Hi,

It is going to be hard for FS to pull back the gap now. They are only part
of a large company that is more bothered about corporate marketing. On the
global scale, GW don't really offer them any competition as they don't have
anything like the product range, and FS are more interested in the range
rather tan just Jaws. In fact, I would guess they would be more interested
in low vision products than blind products as they will make more money from
them. I also think the climb down involved in releasing Jaws Standard to
Media Centre, which is what they need to do would be too much. I don't know
what the plans for flavours of Vista are, but I suspect most of us will end
up on Jaws Pro as some point to get the most out of it. Jaws Standard is
  more expensive than Wineyes Pro.

In terms of stability and bugs, I have been concerned about jaws ever since
6.1 which is quite some time now, and even before that there was only ever
the odd really good version, like 3.7u for instance.

The reasons GW have overtaken them so well in my view is that they have a
team focussed entirely on Wineyes and will only make a new release when they
think they are really ready. So they will work out what to try for a new
release, what people are asking for, what major releases are due, and can
plan around all of that, without having to worry about a corporate marketing
  department.

Interestingly, I ended up getting some considerable money back for my new PC
as they could only get ones with Media Centre edition now, and I'm using
Jaws Standard in 40 minute mode until I get round to transfering everything
over. Jaws, though, so far has given me a couple of issues, whereas Wineyes
works fantastically. However, here is the sting in the tail, so does
Thunder, and that's free! Thunder does seem to need a modern machine to work
but is pretty good at what it does, and it is using a Viavoice voice as
well, so easier to understand than most things!

Over the past 8 years I would say, Wineyes has always had the odd strength,
starting with stability and the internet, but these are seeming to multiply,
so I can only see the gap getting wider.

  Cheers
  Dave
