Hi Peter that is very strange.  I wonder whether it might be worth you removing 
Messenger and reinstalling as you wouldn't lose your contacts and perhaps  it 
might  solve the problem?  Can't think of anything else you could try.

    Peter,

    In Tools, Options and the General page you can get Live Messenger to log in 
on startup.  Is this what you're looking for?

      I wonder if anyone is experiencing the same as me.  When I sign in to 
live messenger for the first time everyday, I have to enter my details re, 
e-mail address and password.  I check the remember me and remember my password 
and sign me in automatically.  If I sign out of messenger, and then sign in 
later, I don't have a problem.  It is just that first sign in of the day.
