I did, I just got to it from tools within Internet Explorer! But like I say,
where is the link to search my PC for updates, it doesn't seem to be there
any longer; Update doesn't know I've reinstalled XP, so still thinks I'm up
to date as I was a few days ago; this is why I need it to scan this machine!

You should use the Windows Update icon found from within the all
programmes group of the start menu. If you're using the classic start
menu, Windows update is at the main start menu. Hope that helps.
