I've done exactly as you suggested and also done a full sweep of spyware as
well. Although a little slower than without SP2 the system is almost
unnoticeablely so now. So as George said my troubles were elsewhere and not SP2.

Thanks for all the help

Roger

You are much better off with service pack 2 than without, what may be
occurring are delays in loading drivers caused by incompatible driver with SP2.
Microsoft have a set of tools which I don't think are screen accessible that
allow you analyse these called "bootvis". You should consider updating drivers
for your sound and video and any other important peripherals like scanner,
printer etc. It is likely that the later releases will work better with
service pack 2 anyway.

I have done a clean re-install of XP Home and a couple of days ago my
Windows Updates notified me of SP2. I allowed it to update and now my start up
is so slow and lengthy I can almost go and made a cup of tea whilst waiting for
it. This used to happened before the install but I put it down to the volume on
the machine but before this installation of SP2 the start up was the fastest
it's ever been but now it's painful.

Is it a symptom of the update or is there something I can do? In fact do I
really need SP2?

    Many thanks

    Roger
