AS long as the machine still has a floppy drive, it is always possible to boot from floppy to a command prompt Whether or not you can access your hard drives from there depends on your file system. A dos boot disk cannot read drives partitioned in ntfs unless a special utility for reading fat partitions is being used. If the partitions are in fat32, they can be read - and then it is also possible to install a standalone dos that can be booted to via a boot loader.
