Hi David.OK then, correction, most computer experts will find it difficult if not impossible to extract the data, but if your the sort of person who needs to protect such sensitive information from the likes of the government's elite crack squad because your some kind of terrorist or some such, "smile", the only sure way is incineration and that's after you've dismantled the drive mechanism using the drill method.

This will not only destroy the rotary mechanism but will also permanently damage the platters which may or may not shatter. You’d be best to do the drilling part outside as the drive may contain toxic chemicals, however the upshot is that even the most determined computer expert will find it near impossible to reassemble the drive and you can forget about anyone getting data off it.
