Andrew,
If you have an older version of Office (say, 2000, 2003, XP), you could
install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and
PowerPoint. This would let your old Office applications handle the new
formats, such as docx.

Think this means you have to have Word 2007 or higher to open. I have
2010, so would be happy to help.
