No, you don't need Maps open. You would just say, "Navigate by car to so and
so", although I'm not sure how Maps works with buses. You don't have to use Siri.
You can open Maps and set the destination and how by hand then set it going and it will
do the same thing. This will get around any problems Siri might have with your accent.

hi Barry, this really Interests me. I think if Siri can be used for directions,
would be great.
What if I wanted to find a place in the city, and wanted to use either public
transport or by car, what would I ask Siri?, and would I have to have the map
app open at the time?,

Maps is great to use with Siri. You just hold the home button in and say, "Navigate--
pedestrian to Sainsbury's", for example. Siri will then say the location and ask if that is
the one you want. Say, "Yes" and the speech will direct you turn by turn to your
location. An ear-piece or headset paired with the iPhone works a treat with this for hands free
navigation.

`Hi Billy.
It's called Maps *smile*, built right in to your iPhone. There is also Google
maps if you prefer which works just as well. No need to pay for GPS navigation
any more.
