If I understand you right, you want (or your friend wants) a zoom utility. You could try EasyRead from

http://www.iconico.com/easyRead/

This installs a couple of toolbar buttons that let you zoom in and out. The buttons aren't particularly easy to see, which is really unfortunate. Apart from that it works very well.
