I must admit I think the Portset media centre is very expensive for what it actually does and the performance that it gives. In reply to this message, there will be a number of people who may respond advancing the argument that the cost is related to low production and that it is a standalone unit to serve the audience the product is aimed at; In summary, people who cannot or do not want to use a computer. I think that needs exploring a little more though as such arguments will not hold water for too much longer.
The reality is that Digi TV from Nebula Electronics gives people so much more accessibility and functionality in equal measure. I could write pages and pages describing the superb range of features which go above and beyond any other product I know in terms of viewing TV and listening to radio programmes, and there are pictures too should you need them. However many of these have been explored through this list before. What I will say is that, if you are prepared to have a computer in your home, and if you are prepared to learn some keystrokes, you can purchase a new Del computer and have the fantastic access Digi TV provides for about £400. Because the programme is constructed so well using standard Windows controls, the freely available Thunder screen-reader works very well with it. I have just tested it. Yes there are things Thunder is not so good at. But it works with Digi TV, so you can move through tV channels, set programmes to be recorded with considerable ease from the electronic programme guide, and you can view programme descriptions, etc.
There will come a time in the not too distant future where people will start to use computers in their living rooms within the family home to deal with their television viewing if it is not happening already. The falling price of computers and programmes like Digi TV are going to play a major role here, and so the cost and the functionality of 
the more specialist product has got to improve.

Hi Terry,

I would have to disagree with the reliability bit.  Ask Frank Haslam
<Smile>.  He was in a 100 percent strength area, and the darned thing
wouldn't even tune in for him, even though the engineer who installed the
aerial checked it all out, and Portset tried to blame it on the area. I am not at all impressed with the Portset Media Centre. Anything that can play Daisy, but can't play MP3, is just a little bit incredible to me. And over 
800 quid for no picture?

Well Chris there's always the Portset Media Centre.
Although more expensive than the I-Player it does far more, and I can say
from experience is a good deal more wholistically accessible and reliable.

That's very bad news. I was hoping one day to get the IPlayer whenever I
can access Freeview. There are software and hardware devices that allows
you to watch freeview on your PC, but indeed where does it leave us in
terms of accessibility, particularly those who don't own a computer? Any
thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
