Hi Jim.
There is a tool called Phone Switch on the N82, you can use this to transfer contacts, messages and calendar entries from your old phone to the new one. You will find this in the tools menu and it uses Bluetooth to achieve the transfer of all your content.

I suppose then I will have to copy my contacts to the sim and then to the memory card on my new phone?

I'm no phone expert, but this suggests that your contacts were stored
in the memory of your old phone, rather than on the SIM card.
