Joe, Another way of getting into the Search Companion is Windows key and F. It might be worth a try, although I don't know why f3 does not work. The Search Companion in XP is a much more sophisticated tool than the search in earlier versions of Windows. I remember that I had some problems at first with it. I found Sarah Morley's book from RNIB very helpful in this and other XP novelties.
