Hi Julie,
It sounds like something has become corrupted on the drive such as the
record of where files are stored.
Windows does have a disk repair tool which sometimes works but not always,
and there are several software tools you can get which will help fix the
problem. If you know the make of the actual drive i.e. Seagate, Fujitsu,
Western Digital etc., they often have recovery tools on their websites.
