Hi Hussein.

Well now, I'd really appreciate it if you could give me a demonstration of how you work with Dragon on Skype. Dragon is something I'd really like to use, but I've been put off by the purchase of additional specialist scripts and of course the problems that I mentioned in my email. If you'd be willing and if you have the time, I'd kindly ask that you add me to your contacts and we can have a chat about how you use it, perhaps giving me a little demonstration. I'm by no means a computer beginner *smile*, but I'm not pleased with what I've seen so far, so if you've developed a system then I'm going to attempt to learn it. My Skype user name is "ibrahimgucukoglu" without the quotation marks and I look forward to speaking with you.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hello Ibrahim,

Not a problem at all. I do have some sight but rely more heavily on the
screen reader part of my access software than the magnifier.

From what I remember, Jaws may or may not have a 'virtual cursor' you can
use to navigate around the screen in areas where a traditional cursor is not present. I use this to navigate the Dragon Bar, and find that the menus and
dialogs themselves are accessible without it.

The primary issue of course as you rightly mentioned is to be able to know
what the program is output to the screen in as near as real time as
possible. In this regard, I was able to achieve this by the simple
expedient of having the screen reader running at the same time as I was
dictating. As the webcam I use has noise cancelling and due to its
position, my voice was picked up over the screen reader, even though the
speaker from which the screen reader was sounding was directly below the
webcam's microphone. One could of course use headphones to ensure the
speech was not picked up by the microphone, but this defeats the purpose of
working in comfort without wires.

I'm really happy with my setup. I get very good accuracy, know very quickly if an error has been made, and require minimal revision and spell checking.
I therefore almost never need to use actual sight to operate the program.

HTH.

Hi Hussein.

Excuse me for asking, but do you have any sight? I used to use dragon
naturally speaking with jaws 10, but one of the problems I found was that I
was unable to easily tell whether what I was saying was being accurately
recognized and therefore found rectifying any mistakes difficult. I can
appreciate that if you have some sight at least enough to use a computer,
this problem doesn't apply to you, but for totally blind people such as
myself, we need additional scripts such as JTools which is an inexpensive
suite including a basic interoperability with Dragon Preferred.

All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi,

No, you don't need anything special to use the software. Just a microphone.
I use my Logitech webcam which also has noise cancelling and this works
great. But you could even use the computer's built in microphone, for
example those on a laptop.

Another option is to use a headset, but I've found unless this is a wireless one you'll be tied to the computer. With the webcam I mentioned above, the
quality is such that I can continue dictating even when moving around my
room so I don't have to be directly in front of the computer. It's a
godsend when working on my novels, when I don't want to feel as if I'm
working sitting in the same place all the time.

Hi Hussein So if you use this do you need any thing else to go with it?
like I've been told some thing about a program for Jaws called JC to
use Dragone natural speaking software, If you don't then I'll be
looking at getting this program once more.

Hi,

I'm not sure if you meant the subect as the actual title of the software so
I'll speak from my own experience in general.

I've had great success with Dragon Naturally Speaking 10. Earlier this year
both my hands were in splints for the best part of two months due to
suspected carpel tunnel syndrome. I used Dragon to dictate all my e-mails,
letters and some longer reports. The accuracy level is almost directly
proportional to the amount of training you do beforehand, as you have to let
the software get used to your voice and speaking patterns. But it works
wonderfully even for me with my totally skewed accent (one of the curses of
being a multi-linguist).

I believe you can get the basic edition for less than £100, although the
Preferred one is more expensive. I got mine cheaply when I was travelling
abroad, which also has multilanguage support, but if you don't need that
than things may well be cheaper.

There are undoubtedly other packages out there, but Dragon is one of the
better known.

HTH.
