HI Marie.
Ideally you want the quickest connection possible, the time given with Ping
represents the time it takes for packets of data to make the round trip
between you and the ping site and back. therefore the quicker the time the
better. Therefore the smaller the number the better.
I get times that vary throughout the day but they are never worse than about
30 MS for www.google.co.uk. I have seen connections twice and 3 times that
time but it also depends on your broadband upstream and downstream speeds.
I would only really worry about these ping times if you are having specific
problems. In Jackie's case it was a number of different models of internet
radio not playing streams reliably.

Ok, I've read it all and understand the basics of what it does and what
it's for, but it doesn't answer my question about what the average number
should be. Has anyone any ideas? is the higher the better or the other way
around?

Have found this page for starters on using Ping and Tracert. Some of the
values, particularly for pinging a distant computer look a bit low but the
way the commands work and what they do is well explained.
