Hi Mike,
I'm doing OK. I have electricity & water, and so far I haven't seen any
house damage (fingers crossed).
I'm ready to do the masterclass on Tuesday. My topic will be:
"Music, Community, and Being A Vessel For Your Art"
I want to share experiences about the importance of music in our
communities, and reinforce the idea that music is for everyone. While
there is a real value in striving for technical excellence, it is not the
only thing we should focus on. I'll frame the discussion using my
background in ethnomusicology, but I'll also offer personal insights as a
working musician on "getting outside myself." I want to encourage players
at all levels to deepen their understanding of the impact they have in
their communities through their music.

that you would be doing a masterclass with the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble.
Are you still up for doing that on Tuesday? We totally understand if you
don't want to do it because you are dealing with other things like broken
pipes, no power, or just trying to recover.
If you are still up for it, can you let me know what topics you plan to
talk about? For reference, the group consists of everything from below
average high school band players who are returning to their instruments to
semi-pros. Most in the group would have played in the high school band and
then a little college marching band and maybe some other community band
experience. There are just a few with music degrees.
If you want to talk about some ethnic music or something historical that
might be of interest to band geeks that could be good. Or anything else
you think would be good should be fine.
