Here are some options for guest online masterclasses in the Fall. I have
not contacted any of them about this. Figured I would get some opinions
first. It is a little jazz heavy, but that is partly because I know those
guys are really hurting right now.
Paul Klemperer- Jazz saxophone and also an ethnomusicologist. He's a very
interesting guy and could probably do some presentations on music of
various countries and cultures.
Tom Hale- Austin Symphony principal horn
Sumner Erickson- former tuba with the Pittsburgh Symphony
Michael Melinger- Saxophonist who runs the Austin Jazz Workshop. He has
extensive experience with developing educational programs. He is also a
big proponent of school band programs.
Joey Colarusso- Yet another jazz saxophonist.
John Caputo- Euphonium player formerly of the Air Force Band in San
Antonio. In demand as a soloist and teacher. Conductor of Austin Brass
Band.
Danny Johnson- Early music scholar and performer. I think he could come
up with something of interest to our group.
I did contact someone I know at the Austin Symphony. He said they could
provide someone of any instrument to do a masterclass for $75 an hour. We
cannot request specific players though, just what instrument we want. He
said it is common for them to send a trumpet or other brass player to do a
masterclass for all brass. Their normal model is to have a few people play
and then be coached by the clinician. I am not sure if many in ACWE would
be up for that. I also asked if they could do something that was more of a
general presentation on some topic. Waiting to hear back.
The ASO is also preparing a virtual version of a chamber music program
they did called Music and Human Conflict. I saw this earlier this year and
it was really good. They got into Facisim and the Holocaust and featured
music of Shostokovich, Haydn and more.
