Hello band, and band enthusiasts!
No, you don't want to go to Eeyore's Birthday! Or, maybe you do... but come
to the TCMF afterward. Just be sure to put your shirt back on. And refrain
from playing the bongos while bands are onstage. And maybe they sell
responsibly-sourced vegan Visine in the store?
11:00am -- Austin Ukestra, directed by Kevin Carrol, is returning this year
with their large ensemble of, you've got it -- ukuleles! Did you know there
are tenor and bass ukuleles? And electric ukuleles? Come check them out!
They're pretty cool. And get something coconut flavored from the cafe for
the full island experience.
12:15pm -- Band of the Hills is by far our largest band at the TCMF --
they've brought upward of 80 players! We'll see how many return this year.
And if we have a wide enough deck to seat them all! Volunteers, you'll
definitely be needed to evict patio patrons and remove tables and chairs to
create space.
1:30pm -- Wimberley Valley Big Band. If my memory serves, this group is an
offshoot of the Hill Country Community Band of Wimberley. And maybe they've
never played the TCMF before. And perhaps they were on the roster for the
cancelled 2020 festival. And it's possible that they perform their set
while riding unicycles. Or could be I made all of that up.
2:45pm -- Geoff Bradford is back for better weather! Geoff was on the
covered deck this Monday with the inclement weather. The weekend forecast
is more clement, so he'll get the audience he deserves while playing the
main stage. Rock music, a little on the psychedelic end of the spectrum,
with an excellent sax-man. Bring your friends from Eeyore's!
4:00pm -- Paul Klemperer was one of ACWE's guests for our COVID-zoom
instructional rehearsals. He's a self-described "ethnomusicologist." Think
Anthony Bourdain with a sax! Paul has traveled worldwide and immersed
himself in the local music scenes, returning with insights to share about
foreign rhythm patterns, intervals, energy, and flow. He incorporates all
of this into some very improvisational jazz.
5:15pm -- Blowcomotion is a Community Brass Band Learning Workshop, founded
on the belief that you can always dust off that old tuba from high school,
learn a new instrument, or pick up music for the first time entirely, even
if you didn’t have that chance as a kid. They welcome adult players of all
skill levels, even total beginners. Bring your horn. Or *a* horn!
6:45pm -- Austin Jazz Band, directed by Bobby Davis, shifts our musical
gears again, back to the big-band style so prevalent at the TCMF. This
group is made up of both professional musicians and music educators, and
are truly top-notch. We have them every year, and they always draw an
appreciative audience.
Whew! My lil' finglers are tired from all that typing. The TCMF is winding
down... if you haven't made it out yet, the time is now! See you there.
