Charlie:
The nozzle has the usual two o-ring seals that in this case sit above the
fin attachment holes.
Care has to be taken to assure there are no burrs on the ID, but because
the heads of the screws are below the surface of the tube ID, the o-rings
slip over them when the nozzle is installed. Including static tests, there
have been nine firings of this assembly w/o failure.
BTW, I believe the initial conception--for the 9 inch dart booster--was by
Tom Mueller; he and I had a long discussion at that launch about the
details of the design of the countersink on the ID and I was left with the
impression that it was his work.
