I think the best single description I've seen is: William F. Rogers, "Apollo Experience Report - Lunar Module Landing Gear Subsystem", NASA TN D-6850, 1972. (Should be findable online but I don't have a URL handy.)

There are a whole bunch of Apollo Experience Reports -- part of the effort to record hard-earned wisdom as follow-on funding evaporated and it became clear that teams were going to be broken up and expertise lost -- and they are a good place to look if you want to know details on Apollo stuff, including not only how things were done but why.
