Yep - if the second stage was a cheap (fsvo "cheap") solid it might make
some sense (a bit like a 2-1/2 stager), saving the cost and complexity of
the "first" stage liquid engines - - especially as you could use the
necessarily strong aerodynamic case as a motor case, rather than just
throwing it away.
