Right you are on the smells. I've occasionally crossed paths with some
organic sulfur compounds. Some of our smelliest.
I used to consult at a chem plant that made mercaptans. My clothes would
reek at the end of the day; I always felt bad for my seatmates on that
Amarillo to Albuquerque flight. My wife made me strip off my clothes in the
garage.
During my jr year at Northwestern I did a year independent study project
with an org chem prof. James Marshall, has over 220 pubs in the J. of Org
Chem. At one point I did a reaction with some mercaptan. When finished, as
was SOP for the 70's) I poured the residue down the drain. A while later a
couple of chem lab TA's show up and wonder if we have any idea what that
horrible smell might be. My labmate, a 1st yr grad student who was my
supervisor and I denied any knowledge of it. Ah, the good old days.
