[AR] fire lines in the sky

I remember seeing pictures of glowing ICBM warhead lines re-entering (near
Johnston island, Pacific?). But since cruise missiles were used on Syria, I
cannot

explain the fiery lines in above picture, especially since they end abruptly
in the sky. Above their target? Cruise missiles do not re-enter. 

OTOH, could it be they were launched from land and the trails are the
booster rockets firing as pictured with an open objective?
