I keep a baby monitor transmitter outside (sealed in a plastic bag) so I can listen to the birds inside without having to open a window, door, etc. Sometime late night before last I heard the repeated screech-like call of a young Barred Owl. It was shortly followed by the call of an adult Barred. While the parent hawks were away hunting, I took the opportunity yesterday morning to take a quick look at the young Red-shouldered Hawk chicks down in the woods in a large Beech tree. I had seen one chick before from a distance, but today I could see three. Here is a photo I was able to manage through the quickly growing foliage. One chick is hidden from view on the right. Another Indigo Bunting showed up at our feeders yesterday, but this male was still in his winter plumage. He had not yet changed from his winter mix of brown and blue to his all blue breeding season (get the girls) color. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
