Buchanan Birders, Chazzy and I spent the morning birding and hiking some of our favorite areas in Madison County, Kentucky. We didn't expect to find any new migrants but resident birds were singing everywhere and we got to listen to Phoebes, Meadowlarks, and Bluebirds along with the other birds we have been hearing the past week or so. A lone Red-shouldered Hawk, some Kestrels along the power lines, and a kettle of Turkey Vultures were our raptors for the day. At Owsley Fork Reservoir we found a raft of 131 Redhead and 28 Ring-necked Ducks. At Reba Lake a pair of Bufflehead were keeping 24 Coots company. A beautiful Mourning Cloak was unexpected - I'm starting to believe there just may be an end to this interminable winter.
