After a night of storms and heavy rain I went looking for shorebirds that may have stopped over in flooded fields, but found none, though fellow birder David Raines found 12 Solitary Sandpipers and one Spotted in his area near the Breaks Park. I did find 14 Eastern Kingbirds sitting along a section of pasture fence and I heard the songs of a Kentucky Warbler, numerous Yellow Warblers, Yellow-throated Warblers, Black-and-white Warblers and American Redstarts. I also heard both Orchard and Baltimore Orioles singing today. Red-eyed Vireos were singing everywhere. A very late female Purple Finch is still coming to our feeder. Both male and female Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were at our feeders today along with male Indigo Buntings and Pine Siskins. Yesterday I counted 34 Pine Siskins under the feeders. Yesterday I also had two bright, male Scarlet Tanagers that came down together to our yard stream. Below are links to a couple of photos of them. Pardon the tall grass; we have had too much rain lately. http://www.pbase.com/mayhorn/image/112326168 http://www.pbase.com/mayhorn/image/112326169 Roger Mayhorn Compton Mountain
