This morning as the misty rain began to turn into a slow drizzle I put on a raincoat and birded our property here on the mountain. The birds were pretty active with EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, CEDAR WAXWINGS, ROBINS and a male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK feeding on wild cherries, and several YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS feeding on Poison Ivy berries. I found three good thrushes, (not including Robins and bluebirds) a GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, a WOOD THRUSH and a couple of SWAINSON'S THRUSHES. The GRAY-CHEEKED was a first for this fall. Several NORTHERN FLICKERS are passing through right now. There were five probing the ground in the backyard for ants or grubs. Three TENNESSEE WARBLERS were flitting about as they passed through to a warmer South America. Among all these others I found a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and a BLUE-HEADED VIREO. Sometimes birding in the rain can be more productive than a sunny day. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
